the 12″ white oak Carved Rim Bowl is one of my signature pieces. I produce these in limited batches because they are time consuming to produce and the wood I select for them is rare. The multi-step finish is exceptionally deep and rich in color. Each step of my finishing method for these bowls works to compliment and accentuate the medulary ray flecks and chatoyance in the rift sawn wood.
The rim on this special bowl is known as a beaded shoulder because it cantilevers inward over the interior area. The bead has been hand-carved and ebonized to create a dramatic detail on the top of the bowl, which is complimented by a sharp shadow line around the bowl interior.
This bowl is designed as a display piece. I think it serves as a decorative centerpiece that stands alone and also looks great with temporary seasonal floral arrangements or other special decorative functions. The finish is not intended for use with acidic foods or dressings.
